This is a Fan - Fiction based on Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking and the books that followed. It is a very good series, I suggest it.
The Turn (this part comes almost straight from the book but reformatted to fit. ((like your fullscreen movies XD)))
Back in the 50's Watson, Crick, and Franklin put their heads together and solved the DNA riddle in six months. Thing might have stopped there but then the soviets grabbed the technology. Spurred by the fear of war, money flowed into the developing science. By the early sixties there was a bacteria produced insulin. A wealth of bio-engineered products followed flooding the market with offshoots of the governments darker search for bio engineered weapons.
Later, somone made a mistake and a lethal chain of DNA escaped. It left a modest trail of death to Rio where it was dealt with The majority of the public unaware. Unbenownst to the scientists though, the virus mutated attaching itself to a bio-engineered tomato through a weakspot in it's modified DNA. The tomato was officially known as the T-4 Angel tomato from there came the viruses name, Angel.
unaware that the tomato was carrying the virus, it was carried by the airlines. 16 hours later, it was too late. The third world countries were decimated in a frightening three weeks. the US shut down in four. borders were militerized and the governmental policy of 'sorry we can't help you' was instituted. The US suffered many deaths too, but it was nothing compared to the other countries.
The largest reason that civilization remained intact was that Interland Species were resistant to the Angel Virus. Witches, the undead, trolls, gargoyles pixies, and faries were unaffected. Werewolves, werefoxes, living vampires, and leprechuans got the flu. The elves are believed to have died out completely.
Once the Angel Virus was erradicated, the combined numbers of Interland species was about equal to that of the human population. A chance they quickly siezed. The Turn, as it came to be called began at noon with a single pixie and ended at midnight with humanity huddling under the table trying to come to grips with the fact that they had bee living beside witches vampires and weres since before the pyramids.
Humanities first gut reaction to destroy the Interland population died quickly When it was shoved under theyr'e noses that Interland had kept things running while the world fell apart. The first years after the Turn were a madhouse. Afraid to strie out at Interland the humans outlawed medical research as the demon of there woes. Bio-labs were leveled and the bio-engineers who escaped the plagues were killed legally. there was a second subtler wave of death as the people that bio-engineering technology kept alive, died. Eventually all the humans crowded in towards the cities leaving the outskirts cheap for the interlanders, which they happily bought.
Setting:
Current day, with current technology minus the bio-engineered stuff. It is set in Cincinati and the Hollows which is across the river from Cincinati. I know nothing about the actual places and the author doesn't describe it too well so it is a place of your imagination. Cincinati is where most of the Humans live, The Hollows is where most of the Interlanders live.
Humans
Most humans know nothing about Interlander and in fact, most humans are scared of Interlanders. Occasionally one will be brave enough to cross into the Hollows for a bit of night life but not usually. Then there are the few humans who, due to finincial reasons, grew up in the Hollows and therefor are better educated and not afraid.
Humans can perform ley line magic just as well as witches, making them wizards, but the are considered a joke among Interlanders. Humans can also summon demons.
One of the most important things to know about humans is their fear for everything tomato. Tomatos sicken them and they are loathe to so much as glance at one or be near one. This is becuase the virus was carried on a type of tomato, but those tomatos don't exist anymore.
Interlanders
Interlanders blend in with humans like they did before the turn, nothing about them sticks out unless they want something too. Theyre houses are always well kept and
