Athral sped above Cloud, spotting the flying shapes among the cliffs. He wondered what birds they were. As he got closer he realized that there were many Golden Eagles like him, but he also saw several other types of eagles and hawks, and even a few falcons. This was a more moderate poart of the desert, there was probably more food around here. Athral perched lightly upon an outlook in the cliff, scanning the cliffside for any females.

Cloud watched his avian friend curiously, then trumpeted to a mare he saw nearby. She raised her delicate head and nickered back, flicking her tail, then resumed grazing. Cloud, looking pleased with himself, raised his head high and trotted forward, tail arched pleasantly. He pranced about her, whinnying playfully. The mare regarded him again, snorted, and approached him slowly, nipping his neck. She then proceeded to whinny in laughter as her herd came over the rise. The lead stallion, a massive brute just a hair smaller than Cloud charged up to him with a roar of hate. Cloud, the ever cool horse, smiled coyly and pranced backwards, whickering peaceably. I mean no harm! Cloud whickered, flattening his ears. BEGONE! The other stallion roared again, pawing the ground. Oh geez, no need to get your mane in a bunch! If you wanted a fight, you should have just said so! Cloud whinnied, suddenly surging forward and colliding with the brute with a crash similar to that of a tree hitting the ground. Hooves flew and teeth snapped, blood sprayed. The stallions tussled for less than a minute before the smaller stallion broke away and cantered off a few paces, panting. You win...Spare me my life? He panted at the larger Cloud, who seemed rather unfazed. Go. And take your mares. I do not desire a heard. Cloud thought back, licking a wound on his leg instead. The other stallion looked confused for a moment, then whistled for his mares and foals to follow him out. The herd moved off a little ways, then stopped to resume grazing. The mare that Cloud had first met whistled to him, then reared up companionably. Cloud returned the gesture, kicking the air and making more blood spray about. She whinnied, then turned to join her herd, a filly joining her happily.

Athral looked down upon Cloud's brawl. What was it with horses? Athral noticed a pretty eagle, a Golden Eagle such as himself. She was sleek, with shining bronze feathers. He leapt from his perch, gliding around the cliff face to where the Golden Eagle now perched. She called to him and he slowed, perching beside her. "My name's Kaia." She told him. "Athral, a pleasure to meet ye."

Cloud, now bored, decided to see what Athral was up to. Trotting back and eyes on the sky, he spotted the bird with a mare. What a bird, finding mares and cozening up to them already! You stud horse! He whinnied pleasurably, rearing up and putting his front hooves on the rock face. Oh for wings!

Athral heard Cloud, and smiled. He continued his conversation with the female, Kaia. "So how did you end up here?" she asked him. "Well," and he commenced with his story.
Note from Kevin: Anor..... How does a bird smile?

Ignoring me, eh? Cloud snorted and retreated, studying the cliff face. He quickly found a spot in the cliff that, if the stallion moved quickly, would allow Cloud to reach the top. Prancing with pleasure, the equine backed up, then charged the first tier, leaping from rock to rock until he could go no higher. Panting, CLoud managed to get a breath and whinny loudly, pleased at his success in beating the cliff. Who needs wings! He pranced about, blood dripping from his wounds to form a rather gruesome image. The horse looked more like he had defeated a bunch of cougars rather than a large cliff.

"Ah!" Athral cried when the horse reached him. "What'r you- How'd you get up here?" Athral rolled his eyes. "You're dripping blood everywhere. You're going to attract something, you know? Let's get you cleaned up. Athral flew to the top of the cliff, landing beside a short cactus with long thorns. He used his beak to pull all of the thorns out, and pulled it from the ground, carrying it to Cloud. Athral scooped some of the soft plant out of the inside, spreading it on Cloud's wounds. "Now stop moving or it will never work and you'll attract something huge."

Cloud held stock-still, legs locked. His eyes were still playful, and he longed to munch on the soft, juicy flesh of the cactus. He flicked his tail and snorted softly. Is this gonna hurt? I surely hope not... He thought, this time twitching his mane while his tail slapped away a biting fly.

Athral applied the cactus remedy to all of Cloud's wounds. The cactus juice acted as a healing glue. it sanitized the wound and glued it shut, quick, easy, painless. Athral saw Cloud's longing, so when he was done, he held the rest of the cactus up for him to nibble on. "Here. Now, no more horsefights, eh?"

Oh joy! Thanks! Cloud whickered, taking the plant in his mouth and savoring the flavor and juiciness. You are talented. How useful! He sauntered away and looked down the cliff face at the other eagle. He flicked his tail and perked his ears. Pretty mare. Good day, lady! He whinnied down to her, pawing the ground in a pleasurable manner. Mares dug that action.

"Yeah, eat up. It's amazing what you can learn in Scotland. Well, the cactus thing I learned here, but you get the idea." If Athral were human, he would do something like slap his forehead. Cloud was awesome, he was so amusing. He was such a horse. "Now, Athral began, the question of the matter is how you're getting down."

Cloud glanced over at Athral, then rolled his shoulders in a shrug. The stallion glanced down at the ground far below, then backed up from it, considering what good it would do to jump. Deciding this plan would be ineffectual, Cloud swished his tail and turned around, regarding the land up here. I think I'll just go this way. He snorted, shaking his mane, then walking slowly in that direction. Bring your mare if you wish. He thought glancing back at the cliff edge, then up at Athral.

Athral rolled his eyes. "Would you like to join us, Shureni? Who knows, it may be some fun." Shureni nodded, and took to the sky, Athral following close behind. The pair flew above Cloud, following him in whatever direction he chose to travel in.

Cloud cantered along, feeling exceptionally lazy. Why bother galloping when this lazy pace was so much better? The stallion snorted pleasantly, ears perked up. Then he smelt it. Two legs. With their metal minsters. Cloud halted, ears erect. What do you see up there? Cloud grunted, raising his head. He couldn't see over the next rise.
"I jus' love stallion hunting. Mebbe we can bring home a gorgeous one. Break it an' give it to my little girl as a birthday present." One man grunted, nudging the driver. Five men sat in the open-top jeep, cruising along the hard-packed dirt and swerving to avoid the bigger scrub bushes and cacti.
Cloud could hear the whine of the jeep's engine and pawed thr ground unhappily. He didn't like two legs very much. They were always trying to catch him. Deciding which direction the truck was coming from, Cloud turned and dashed to the right, hitting a full gallop as the jeep came into view.
"I see 'im!" The man grunted, "A golden stallion! Ah, he's a beaut! I want this one!" The jeep swerved and the chase began.

Athral looked down at Cloud's behavior, sensing that something was wrong. He glanced about, seeing if anything was out of the ordinary. Sure enough, a human vehicle. "Cloud, run!" Athral cried. As a distraction, Athral made a wide circle in the air, then dove steeply over the jeep and its inhabitants. He saw five two-legs, and swooped parallel to the car. He flew above it in the same direction that it was travelling, then reached down and his talons caught a good amount of one man's hair. Athral threw his wings wide to slow himself, and ended up taking two foot fulls of hair along with him. Shureni followed his example, targeting what she thought was the controller of the vehicle, he had a large round wheel in his hand while the others did nothing, so she glided low over him and pulled his hair out. Damn humans.
