"You would have either figured it out, or you would have asked if there was a way out, in which I would tell you." He laughed. "I spent three nights in prison, then disappeared wothout a trace. No one knows where I am. Or, nowadays, what I look like." He smiled.

Mastrik sneered. "Thanks for the advice. Some brother you are." He smiled. But I'm glad I know now." He stared at the ceiling again. "Now I know to avoid prison." He thought about things for a moment. "Or you know, we could avoid killing altogether. We could both do it a few more times, save the money, I know you get payed pretty well, and we could retire. I know you have enough money saved up to last a while."

Eiran nodded. "That we could. I only do it to get payed,a nd your right, I have plenty of money. You should have a good amount too, I don't think you've spent any in prison." He laughed. We could do that, but what would we do afterwards?"

((I am having plenty of fun, by the way. And MY posts, even though they are short, are part of a conversation. They continue the conversation, continue the thread, in a productive manner. I'm not expecting all of your posts to be novellas, but I want them to be productive or have meaning. If they are a line long but continue on a conversation or have meaning in the thread, then go for it, but "Okaaayy, now what?" has no meaning, and is not productive. That's all I want from your posts.))

Charts. Many, many charts. And they all said one thing- the forest was dying. Her forest. Rising gracefully from her bed, she strode out through the hole in her tree and looked around her. All these trees were dying because of the population. Too many humans were encroaching now. The forest was less than half its size, making room for the rich humans looking for a hunk of wild land. The Aburlupen growled as she gazed at her trees, each showing signs of death. Leaves dropping despite the season, browner leaves, thinner leaves, drier bark. This pissed the Aburlupen off. Her ind were forced to live on a reservation- as if the species were part of a zoo and on display for the rest of the world to come and oggle, "Look! The last of the Arburlupen! The once-famed and dangerous tree wolves!" But that was no more. Only 20 such reservations existed worldwide where once the wolf people roamed wherever they wished, and these reservations were shrinking now. As technology took over, the natural way of life was dying. Everything was built upwards, which meant that shopping for the Arburlupen meant catching a Roc and flying up, provided you could control it well enough to avoid man's technology. Many a wolf had been killed when struck by a flying vehicle.
Lalika was a gorgeous, multi-hued Arburlupen- blacks, reds, greys, and browns mixed upon her skin. Her eyes- one green and the other gold- were piercing and intelligent. She had hit well over 400 years old now, the lifespan of a tree wolf being 600 years or so. She was considered an elder now, even though she was no longer attached to a pack. They called her the Wild Wanderer on the reservation, and all Arburlupen respected and feared her. Lalika was highly adept in the sciences and preferred peace over war, but was known to be a cold and quick killer. Arburlupen were a now-rare and unique species- they had the ability to communicate and shape trees, as well as shape themselves. Over the years way back in BC times, the dire wolf (thought to be extinct) had simply evolved, earning thr ability to speak and shape trees as well as take a humanoid form. However, they could not blend in with society- their fur colors were retained, changing their skin to match their fur. Such changes were exhausting, though, so a tree wolf was not commonly seen in transformation. They could only do it once a day- twice caused them to pass out for hours. Even then, when in human form, they retained wolf-like features- longer face, pointier noses, wolf ears and tail. Their nails were also long and sharp- claws. Lalika stroked her tree's bark, and it rustled its leaves happily as she walked away, leaving the reservation and entering private property of the humans- this place was marked for construction soon. And it had once been hers. The government hadn't offered her money or goods for the land- they had simply put up a laser wire that said, "No Trespassing!" on it. It gave a slight jolt as one walked through it, but the enhanced strength of the Arburlupen could pay it little mind. She sat upon her old stump and stared around her as the trees, no longer in care of the Arburlupen packs, died slowly. A loud motor in the distance indicated to her that some trees were already dead and were now being removed by the humans. She sighed, ending it in a growl. What was to come, now?

((Ah. Kayla. You have just given me an idea. Grazie.))
Oh God no. Not again. Subject #492329-08 woke up every day with the same thoughts. He would have done anything to just die. Death would be preferable to the torture he was subjected to every day by the men and their 'Treatments'. He didn't know life outside of constant, mind breaking, exhuastion and pain. Some of the subjects believed that when you died, ou would be taken to a place with a big room and a big soft cot and no one would make you hurt again. Subject #492329-08 was sceptical about it but like the others, he wanted to believe. He could finally die.
Subject #492329-08 was pushed out of his cot, onto the moving ground like always. Then when he got a distance one of the men would pull him off and take him into a room, tie him to a chair, hook probes and sensors to his body and then stick a needle in him. Usually it cuased severe, extreme pain. and then he would be taken back after being beaten by the angry man who had put the needle in him. This time, the needle didn't hurt. Everything was black. "Fuck!" Shouted the scientist. He had lost another subject. He didn't like his job but he really needed the money. If he found what they had wanted he wouldn't have to work again. He checked the computers for a few seconds illogically hoping that maybe the subject would snap out of it. Was that a blip? No. He was kidding himself. He killed another life for money. He flipped back a glass box covering a red button and pressed it. Subject #492329-08 was automatically disconnected from the equipment, pushed out of his chair and the floor opened. He dropped through it onto a long conveyer belt with an even spread of freshly killed bodies. The coneyer belt led to an illegal cremation furnace where all the dead subjects would be disposed of.

"We could do nothing, big brother. Nothing at all. We could lounge around and drink Firescotch all day. We wouldn't have to worry about who to kill and where." He sighed. Then he noticed the look on Eiran's face. "You can't retire, can you?"

Eiran shook his head. "No. My employer didn't give me that option. He told me that I can't retire until I get too old to be a hunter. No, I'm afraid that I am stuck in this job for a while to come." An alarm sounded in the front room. It was a high pitched beeping sound. Activity above. Eiran broke into a full sprint down the stairs. He examined his monitors, zooming in on some of his satellite maps, adjusting sensors. "Damn."

Mastrik jumped out of bed, following Eiran down the stairs. He watched from a step back as Eiran worked the wall of machinery. "What is it?" He stepped in for a closer look. He didn't like the picture that he saw on the real-time satellite map. The humans were building up above them.

"This cannot be happening." Eiran checked some charts and paperwork. "No, they're not supposed to build here for many more years." He went through some files, even hacking into the city network to find the source. There wasn't one. "What the hell's going on up there?" Then, another alarm went off, a lower pitched, slow beeping. Another assignment. "Now what?" He yelled.

"Mastrik tapped a screen that said, 'Incoming message.' A file blinked for a moment then opened. It was a video file. The man in front of the camera was shady, you couldn't make out the details on his face. It was Eiran's employer, and further back, Mastrik's employer. "Ah, helo again, Mastrik. Good to see you back." "What is it?" "I obviously have another assignment for you." "Is it about the humans?" "Quite so. There are a few humans I want you to take care of." "Who, when, and where?" Mastrik asked.

"Ah, hasty as always. Okay, I have two main targets. One is Dr. Levowski." A picture came up on the screen. He was a weedy fellow, his face was sunken, his glasses were too large for his face, and his patches of hair were snow white. "He is a medical doctor, but he runs some rather illegal tests. Many have offended me, and I would like him gone before anyone else finds out, clear?" "Yes." Eiran said. "Good. The next is Mr. Derel." The man came up on the screen. He was a normal corporateman, in his forties, looked like he didn't take anyone elses crap. "He is the CEO of the company that is building above your house. I want him dead ASAP." Eiran nodded. "And one more thing. When you kill Dr. Levowski, I want you to kill anyone else you come across, even the janitor. I want no one spared." "But, we are not soldiers, and we are not cold blooded killers." "You are a bounty hunter, Eiran. As are you, Mastrik. You will kill all of them. If you do not, you will wish that you had. You have one week." The video file closed. "Well, let's get to work."

A pulse... Another. A third. Each one harder than the last. Heat, light. Subject #492329-08 wasn't sure whether he was alive or not. Maybe they were right and he was laying on his cot, where he could stay forever. But it couldn't be. It was suposed to be soft and this was very hard and... Moving? He opened his eyes. There was a giant grey ravine above him. and then it was gone. Moving down. It was getting hotter and hotter. Pockmarks passing over him. His eyes felt so strained. He relaxed them and slowly the pockmarks got smaller and smaller until they weren't there at all, just grey, and then grey rectangles. He held his hand over his face, He could see the ridges whorls in his fingers. he unfocused and then he could see his whole hand. What was happening to him. He tried standing up and did so quite quickly. He felt better than he ever had. Looking around he saw other bodies, but more importantly, the furnace. It was getting closer and closer obviously becuase the floor was moving. The furnace was hot but it didn't hurt, he was almost inside it. Interesting. He walked closer, It got hotter, but it didn't hurt. He walked closer and closer until he was inside it. No pain. Hot, yes, but it didn't hurt. His clothes burned off his body. He walked straight through it to the outside, falling into a big container of ashes. He pulled himself up and over the edge falling onto the concrete. He looked around. He needed to run away as fast as he could and he did. He ran past high buildings. His blood pumped fast. he knew he was traveling faster than he ever had. So fast that everything should have been a blur but he could see just fine. Past the red lines, an alarm sounded behind him, past a field of concrete and through more tall buildings. Running running running.

When subject 3492329-08 finally stopped running he saw a large wide building. It had large letters that said, "Safron City Department Store" ((Yes I know and no I won't)). It appeared to be abandoned. His breath came easily still but he wanted to rest. He was still on run mode and didn't have time to think about how he was alive and what was happening or what he would even do with himself. He didn't even realize he could read.
