From the previous forum: Sora flattened her ears momentarily, "I will try not to." She said softly.
The ground beneath their paws slowly changed as time passed; the Savannah became short, rough grass and soft dirt. The elephant ear trees became pine. The air got colder, and as they began ascent, the air also became thinner and harder to breathe. The wind grew in strength, and soon patches of snow began to appear around them. More and more of these drifts appeared until the trio was forced to march through the snow. Sora and Hunter often flicked their raised paws, removing the frozen liquid from between their toes.
The snow grew thicker and thicker, at some points nearly chest height. This impeded them greatly, having to plow through the snow. At these times, Hunter let Kyard take the lead- he was bigger and could plow a better path.
Spotting a cave ahead, Hunter veered towards it- Sora was panting hard now and letting out soft growls- the birthing was upon them and shelter was necessary.
"Come on. In here. Sora's gonna kit any time now." Hunter said, poking his head into the cave.
Sora let out another growl of pain, her stomach contracting and muscles rippling as she strained against nature.
"I know, my love Zuku. It isn't your fault you're sick. I know you would never harm me. I wish I could be of more comfort to you..." Kohana sighed, curling up where she was and watching her mate intently. She would never stop her vigil over her sick partner.
Demon stepped up beside Kohana, watching Zuku for a moment before walking over to the young brute and nudging him with his nose.
"If you need anything, just say. Water, food, whatever. I'm immune to the sickness."
Kyard nodded and took the lead, making a deep and wide path for his two followers. He made sure to go just a tad slower so that the path would be easier for them. “Sora, you’re almost safe.” The snow was encased onto his fur. His breaths were short, and made large forms of misty breath. Just as life, it vanished before his eyes.
A small pair of yellow eyes darted open. Something was coming. The mass of muscle stood up and lurked in the shadows. Her soft white coat and black spots were hid fairly well in the shadows of the cave. Avera hissed quietly to herself as she watched them come closer. Two brutes and one female. She snickered; she would be able to take them, provided they didn’t threaten her too much. She stepped outside of the cave. Her body was shown now. She growled at them. Her voice had a very slick way of sounding. It seemed to leave her lips as if it were pure silk. “Why are you here? This is my cave….”
Zuku looked up at Demon. “Just make sure Kohana is safe. I’m not hungry or thirsty right now.” His voice was empty, weak, and to a point, almost desperate. He was ill, and he was feeling it. It felt like he had been tackled one too many times. His muscles, his bones, skin, even his blood hurt.
Hunter jumped back, startled at the fae's voice and appearance.
"We need shelter. Sora here is about to kit."
As Hunter spoke, Sora sat down suddenly, panting heavily and saliva dripping off her tongue.
Hunter shot his eyes to Kyard. "The plant is small and camouflaged, but we have to find it!"
"Kyard...I...I can't..." She rolled onto her side, her sides heaving painfully. "I can go no further."
Detecting something was going to go wrong, Hunter tore his gaze away from Sora and back to Kyard, "Go Kyard. She must rest. Find a plant that has sharp, ragged leaves and is shaped like a toe pad. When you bite it, it will be bitter but sweet. It will make your mouth numb. Sora needs it. We can find Zuku's plant later; Sora is our priority now."
He turned back to the spotted fae, "Please, may she kit in your cave? The cubs won't make it in this cold, nor will she."
"Very well, young Zuku." He backed away and layed down, dozing slightly while Kohana watched her beloved. Demon knew she'd wake him if Zuku needed anything.
Avera Walked over to Sora and sniffed her. Kyard lowered his head and let a low growl escape his mouth. “Oh hush you old brute. I’m just seeing how far along she is.” Kyard took a step back, still keeping a watchful stance on her. Avera nodded. “Fine. Bring her in, there is…my bed of leaves in the far back. It is warm back there. She should be fine.” She smiled at Hunter, her feminine eyes looking at him, talking all of him in. She turned, her tail swished in a fashion that was attractive, her curves were slender, yet bold. The way she moved, talked, and even looking, it was enough to make any male go crazy. “I have a rabbit that is left. Not too much, but it should be enough to take the edge off from your hunger.” She disappeared into the shadows.
Kyard wedged his body under Sora’s and managed to carry her into the cave. He laid her down on the aged bed. He licked her cheek. “I’ll be back as soon as I can find what you need, love. Just hang in there.” He sprinted out of the cave, his body disappearing into the wall of snow.
Zuku let his head rest again. “Kohana, once I am better, should we try for cubs?” He had to keep their minds to the future. He couldn’t let their moral stoop low.
Sora groaned in pain, her body straining powerfully.
hunter watched Avera walk away, stunned for a moment into inaction by the beautiful creature. The trance broken as she left his view, Hunter shook himself and immediately dashed to Sora. he nudged the rabbit to her maw, urging her to eat.
Sora managed a few bites, then her attention returned to her kitting. After a few minutes of straining, a cub came out from between her legs.
Sora's motherly instinct kicked in instantly; she bit the sac off the cub and licked it until it began to breathe, then pushed it to a teat where it began to suckle.
Then the pain hit. She let out a cougar-like scream; blood began to pour out of her body at unnatural speeds and amounts. Her whole body ached horribly and the hybrid fae felt sick. Slowly darkness overtook her.
"She's gone into shock." Hunter growled, glancing out the cave mouth in hopes of seeing Kyard. If Sora were to live, they needed the herb.
As more time passed, Hunter put his paws on Sora's lower belly and pushed, trying to expel the stuck cub. Finally it's back paws appeared, and Hunter seized to cub's foot with his teeth and pulled the dead thing out. A third followed close behind, and Hunter soon discovered it to be dead as well.
Kneading Sora's belly, the brute determined that no more cubs were present in her belly- only one cub had survived, it's gender still indeterminable for the next week or two.
"Live, Sora. You need to live now."
"Definitely! We should have lots of cubs!" Kohana said brightly, ears perking at the thought.
Kyard sprinted back into the cave and dropped the leaves. He collapsed, snow was over his entire body, and there was ice on his mane. Between gasps of breath, he managed to say, “S-Sora? A-Are you alr-right?” He sat up and licked her face. His body was shivering. He looked at Hunter. “It’s night, the temperature, it’s easily b-below freezing.”
Avera sat at the entrance and smirked. “Far below that.” She stood up and swayed over to Sora and sat closer to Hunter. “Congrats on the cub.” She looked at hunter, her eyes connecting with his. “Good job on delivering the cubs. You’d make a good father.” She smiled and swished her tail over so it touched his back, then let it rest.
Zuku chuckled. “Good. Then we shall start thinking of names?” He closed his eyes, trying to keep the pain from the light away from his orbs. He held in a grunt of pain as his body felt like it was being put under pressure, then released. His eyes opened slowly, everything was fuzzy again. Even through the haze, Kohana was still beautiful.
"You did well. At sunrise, once the temperatures rise, I have other things for you to do. Like bury those two." Hunter nodded towards the bodies at the mouth of the cave, his eyes sad, "As well as find another plant that grows on rock with a small purple flower. And right now, rest and pray Sora makes it through the night." Hunter flicked his tail, finally allowing himself to acknowledge Avera.
"Thank you for all you have done, lady. Now for late introductions? I'm Hunter, the fae is Sora, and her mate here is my king, Kyard." He let himself get lost in her eyes for a moment, his senses dulled. Dragging himself back to reality, Hunter picked up the leaves and chewed them vigorously, then pried Sora's mouth open and dropped the mush in. Instinctively she swallowed, and her breathing soon slowed and lost its ragged edge.
"Let's hope her blood loss wasn't too great and she can reclaim her life from deaths door. Again. You two must have an inferiority complex or something with all these near deaths." Hunter chuckled dryly, glancing at Kyard, then retreating and curling up to rest.
Kohana smiled, "Alright. A girl. We could name her..." She looked vacant for a moment, lost in thought, "Kalila." She laughed at this game, finding it distractingly fun. "Your turn."
Avera grabbed a large leaf and set it by the entrance. She dipped her large paw in the crystal like snow and placed it on the leaf. She dragged it back and put it by Sora’s head. “Lady Sora, let this melt, and there will be water. If you have lost too much blood this should help some.” She swirled around and walked over to Hunter. “So, Hunter, I am Avera. I am a loaner. I live by myself and rarely see others.” She curled up next to him, her head resting on her paws. The warmth from her thick coat radiated off from her sleek body. “Tell me about yourself.”
Kyard shook the snow from his body and curled up on the outside of Sora, hoping his body heat would help keep the cub, and Sora, alive. His heavy head rested on his paws. He would not sleep. He was stay up all night to watch after them. From this moment on, he now had two to care for, and every moment of it, he would cherish it.
Zuku noticed as the sun dropped behind the mountains. He sighed, knowing that their King, Queen, and Healer were up there. He looked back at Kohana. “I would like to name the male…Denku.” His tail swish as he spoke the name.
